LLVLC On YouTube: The Heart Health Myth Of LDL And Total Cholesterol (Episode 69)
http://LivinLaVidaLowCarb.com/blog blogger Jimmy Moore and his wife Christine are tired of the lies being told by the pharmaceutical companies connecting heart health with cholesterol levels and share the truth with you today in the latest installment of their popular “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb on YouTube” series.
In Episode 69, Jimmy and Christine take a look at this myth that having high LDL and total cholesterol will lead to heart disease, heart attacks and death. This needless scare mongering is not grounded in scientific evidence which points more to the ratio between HDL and triglycerides as a key indicator of Heart Health risks:

The LDL particle size is what is most important when you are measuring your lipid panel, so having one of the two major particle size tests done is critical. The VAP Cholesterol Test can be found at http://www.atherotech.com and the NMR LipoProfile test (which Jimmy HIGHLY recommends!) is at http://nmrlipoprofile.com Get your doctor to run one of these tests to know if your LDL particles are the large, fluffy, protective kind or the small, dense, dangerous ones you want to avoid.
Here’s a blog post Jimmy wrote about his 326 total cholesterol:

It’s not the LDL to …
It’s not the LDL to HDL ratio that is as important as the triglyceride to HDL ratio which should be 1-1.

I’ve been lucky in …
I’ve been lucky in that my body doesn’t tolerate wheat/gluten so I’m not eating a lot of that garbage. Most of my carbs come from fruit. I’ve not had a weight problem and have been in good shape but my problem has been severe food allergies. I’ve stumbled upon the low carb diet as it seems to work best with me (my body seems to really like animal protein and fat).
One thing I don’t fully understand is the LDL to HDL ratio. What is considered a good ratio?

I could not agree …
I could not agree more. Oxidation in the body is like rust on metals. It only damages and damages until it crumbles and breaks. Not good for you body!
January 30th, 2010 at 11:26 am
It’s also about the …
It’s also about the oxidative stress damage caused by omega 6 vegetable oils. The oxidation (damage) to the LDL particles is the problem. The ratio is important but it’s also important to reduce oxidative damage. Eating saturated fats (and monounsaturates) is a great way of protecting yourself. Avoiding vegetable oils completely (or as much as possible) in addition to lots of sugars is another.

Oh, I agree, Mark! …
Oh, I agree, Mark! That just started a few episodes ago and it’s driving me NUTS trying to figure out why it’s happening. Still working on it, but we’re doing videos in the meantime. The microphone is built in to the computer.

I love your videos, …
I love your videos, but just one “technical” comment: the microphone feed is a little distorted. I don’t know if your mic is too close or too high, but I hope you can check it out.

Adaptation does …
Adaptation does kick in which is why I had 10 weeks of weight loss stall during my 180-pound weight loss in 2004. Just push though this and you’ll be good to go. I addressed stalls in Episode 12: j7QzJWqOMF0

They also have a …
They also have a good variety pack of bars at Sams. I haven’t had a bar in 3 years. They definitely taste a lot better these days. I’m going to try the chocolate coconut next time I’m in there.

after induction …
after induction your weight loss slows down, thats the way it goes. If you are not loosing any weight at all and are following the diet by the book (you have the book right?) then might be that your body is trying to adapt to your new weight, give it 3 to 4 weeks to stabilize, then you will start loosing weight again. If you are not following the diet by the book, go to ebay, buy it for .99 cents and while you wait for it to arrive into your mailbox, get back into induction. this should work

Oh yeah, I just bought some of the atkins deserts in Sam’s Club the other day. OMG, the chocolate coconut bars are YUMMY! lol

I have been …
I have been struggling really bad for the last week trying to get over a plateau. I have been on my atkins diet for alittle over a month and have lost 30 lbs, but now i’m stuck and it seems like no matter what I do, the scale isn’t budging. It’s SOOoooo frustrating!! lol Do you have any suggestions about getting over a plateau. I still have another 80-90 lbs to lose, so any information would be highly appreciated. By the way, thanks so much for your video’s, its VERY helpful

THANK YOU for watching! The neat thing about TRUTH is it is what it is no matter what people think about it. One day their eyes will be open to it and they’ll be coming to YOU for the answers.

I am watching this …
Thanks Moores!
I am watching this while eating a choco perfection bar for the first time… I am in week 2 of induction and have lost 8lbs. All I can say is WOW to all you have broadcast and “thank you” & Christine for all the information you provide. I love the science behind why this lifestyle works. I also love telling people that I’m the Atkins plan and seeing their reaction – most will go on and on about how it’s so bad. The meat, egg and cheese diet they THINK it is. Silly carb eaters!

THANK YOU! Christine says it’s one of my strongest gifts and I’m happy to use it for a good cause.

That´s great! You always do such a good job. You are a good teacher, you really are!
Who else would tell people in some minutes: what´s important about cholesterol?

AWESOME! As long …
AWESOME! As long as you are eating healthy saturated fats, moderating your protein intake to around 20-25% of your calories, and keeping carbs to a minimum, then most would agree that’s a VERY good diet.
January 30th, 2010 at 11:26 am
I generally agree …
I generally agree with most of your opinions on this stuff jimmy. I think low carb (but making sure low carb veggies are apart of the diet) is one of the best things you can do for your health. High sugar, high GI carb foods are certainly the worst thing for your health. Many of my friends who also do CR are doing a lower carb version.
January 30th, 2010 at 11:26 am
CONGRATULATIONS, …
CONGRATULATIONS, Matthew! I’m not saying you can’t get decent-looking lipids eating any other way than low-carb, but you don’t have to resort to avoiding saturated fat for some imaginary fear that it’s gonna “clog your arteries” and give you a fatal heart attack. Your numbers are pretty stellar for not taking any medications.

And probably MORE …
A high-fat diet will do that.
And probably MORE HDL than the typical Jew, too.

I haven’t read much …
I haven’t read much on particle size and heart attack though… maybe I should do some research into that. I do know that Jewish centenarians have larger HDL particles.
